Creating an Employee Experience From Scratch
Before Cooleaf, Net Health didn’t have a platform for recognition. Heather Groomes is the Employee Experience Coordinator at Net Health. Heather says that before Cooleaf, things weren’t streamlined, making employee experience initiatives especially hard to maintain.
“We had a sort of homegrown solution,” Heather shares. “Over time, it just wasn’t working as we intended.”
Net Health came to Cooleaf with already established core values and a culture of promoting employee health and well-being. What they needed was a place to bring everything together so that their values would be seen and felt by their employees.
Bringing Core Values to Life
Net Health has four core values that drive its culture forward: Agility, Empathy, Collaboration, and Imagination.
These four values are Net Health’s north star, guiding each piece of company culture. They define day-to-day operations and give the team direction when making key decisions. Net Health’s core values led its leadership team to Cooleaf.
Carol Lewis is Vice President of Human Resources at Net Health. She says that agility is how Net Health team members find effective solutions for any problem. “For us, agility is about finding solutions and being able to implement them quickly,” says Carol.“Because we prioritize agility, our team members know how to find impactful solutions quickly, especially in times of toughness. Cooleaf works so well for us because it's an agile solution.”

Core values impact every aspect of life at Net Health. Empathy and imagination allow culture to thrive at Net Health. “Our team members know what it's like to walk in someone else’s shoes. We prioritize empathy and creativity because these qualities allow employees to get to know one another outside of their roles.”
A major part of humanizing the workplace is in recognizing each team member's unique qualities. “They have families, celebrations, and everyday wins,” Carol says. Cooleaf allows Net Health’s team to highlight one another for being who they are, giving their workplace culture its spark of authenticity. “When you recognize someone by giving them that ‘attaboy’ on Cooleaf, it helps them find grace in difficult situations. When you know people you give grace, you create space for collaboration.”

Building Community on a Remote Team
At the beginning of the pandemic, Net Health transitioned to a fully remote workforce. Over two years since the start of the pandemic, Net Health remains 100% remote, continuing to foster togetherness and engagement for its team on Cooleaf.
Heather Groomes says that figuring out how to translate its incredible company culture into a virtual space proved challenging at first. Cooleaf helped by offering suggestions for team challenges and creative ways to bond via the platform.
Now, fun events on Cooleaf are an integral part of remote culture at Net Health. “Our Pet Pageant started on Cooleaf when we had employees submit photos of their pets to have teammates vote on their favorites. It's now become an annual virtual event that we’ve done about three times so far.”
Cooleaf also helps to bring employees closer to the decision-making process, which is key for a distributed, virtual team. “You get engagement from all ends,” shares Heather. “Employees get to put their ideas into action and then they get to say, ‘Wow, I’m really contributing to something really wonderful.’”
By centralizing activities and bringing a “joy factor” to employee engagement, Net Health is using Cooleaf to bridge the gap between work and community for its over 500 employees.
Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)
Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are a core component of Net Health’s people-first culture. Through employee-led special interest groups, Net Health empowers its team members to find commonalities and develop real relationships with one another. Groups like these are vital for workplace bonding and overall team success.

ERGs at Net Health use Cooleaf to communicate and host special programming. “When we have a new ERG launching, we always recommend them to do a Cooleaf challenge,” shares Heather. “It really helps to get their name out there and create a presence within the company.”
One of Net Health’s newest, engineering-focused ERGs used Cooleaf to create a “What Would You Name Us” challenge. A different ERG created a Superbowl challenge that gathered different recipes, fun pictures, and even hosted brackets for the sports enthusiasts!
The ERG-hosted, team-wide celebration of Net Health’s furry friends, “Pet Pageant,” was a major success! At the end of the challenge, the pet with the most votes was awarded a Chewy gift card and of course, a victory crown.
"Support the Supporters" Campaign
Support the Supporters was an initiative brought together by the Black Experience Resource Group (BERG).
BERG wanted to figure out a way to recognize the tireless work of the Customer Support team. “The idea was that these employees work tirelessly 24/7 and deserve to be recognized in a big way,” says Heather.
To best support Net Health’s large, fully remote team, Heather and BERG members decided to make the campaign a custom challenge on Cooleaf. This gave team members a central hub with clear instructions, team benchmarks, and a way to communicate with one another.
Once the challenge was created, support team members could submit an anonymous Amazon wishlist that would be distributed to team members who wished to donate. From there, a custom redemption option gave participants the option to donate their points towards items on the support team wishlists.
By signing up directly in Cooleaf, team members decided on their own if they wanted to participate. The number of participants was incredible, says Heather. “Initially, we were worried that enough people might not be interested. We could not have been more wrong!”

- 95 Net Health employees signed up as “gifters”
- 34 Customer Support team members signed up and submitted their wishlists
- 40 “gifters” made a direct purchase towards a support team member’s wishlist
- $1,985 was donated by Net Health employees
After a few weeks, every participating support team member got something from their wishlist. “This is why our use of Cooleaf is so successful,” says Heather. “Because we have ideas for challenges that come from our employees!”

Elevating Employee Health and Wellbeing
Employee health has always been a priority for Net Health’s leadership. But making sure that every team member prioritizes well-being isn’t an easy task. “We have a great healthcare plan because employee health is our priority,” says Carol Lewis. “Regardless of that, you can’t regulate how your people will take care of themselves.”
On Cooleaf, Net Health has been able to implement challenges that actually incentivize employees for prioritizing their health and taking care of themselves. “Now, we do a preventative health challenge,” shares Carol. “It’s actually become our challenge with the highest participation on an annual basis.”
The Preventative Care Challenge awards team members with rewards points for logging their 2023 preventative health care visits! Team members earn 200 points, equivalent to $20, for getting up to date on their preventive care.
“These preventative visits have saved our team members' lives. We’ve had employees stop life-threatening cancers because they’ve been incentivized to visit their primary care doctor for the first time in years,” Carol says.
Centering employee health has created a culture of well-being at Net Health that goes beyond just days of rest and breaks during the workday. Carol says that the impact of focusing on health has been transformative. “If we can do even one small thing to have people focus on one part of their health; skin health checks, mental health checks, we are doing it right.”

Post-pandemic, Net Health’s focus on general and mental health is especially pivotal for team-wide success. “Because of Cooleaf, we get to try and make sure our people are checking on themselves,” Carol adds. “That's one of the best things that we can do for our employees.”

Remaining committed to its employee experience throughout the pandemic and times of uncertainty has made Net Health’s company culture stronger than ever.
Heather Groomes says that Net Health’s unwavering dedication to its employees and their well-being is a key piece of its overall success. “In times of cutbacks, it's even more important to invest in the employee experience,” shares Heather. “It's what sets you apart from competitors and helps you retain your employees.”
Investing in its employee experience has transformed Net Health. “Without our employees, we wouldn’t be the company that we are,” says Heather. “Showing them we value them as much as we say we do is non-negotiable for us.”

Through unique challenges, team collaboration, and employee surveys on Cooleaf, Net Health has fostered a culture of engaged employees who feel seen and heard. One of the biggest rewards has been the platform's impact on turnover rates. “Anything we can do to reduce turnover is beneficial,” notes Carol Lewis. “When we’re not losing institutional knowledge and spending money to restructure, we’re making strides toward the future of Net Health.”
